If a quote does not list every line above, ask what is excluded. The honest answer should be specific. "Just mowing" is honest. "Everything you need" is not — that's how the August surprise invoice happens.

Garden beds need split and divide every few years. Hedge lines need shape correction. How Often Should Your Lawn Be Mowed in Vermont?

A weekly hired service for a typical half-acre Rutland County lawn runs roughly $45 to $90 per visit, or about $1,200 to $2,400 for the full season — bare mowing only, before any add-ons.
DIY makes sense when:
- Your property is under half an acre and basically flat
- You enjoy the work or want the exercise

What Questions Should You Ask Before Hiring a Lawn Care Company?
Bring these to the first meeting. Watch how the answers come.
- Are you registered as a residential contractor in Vermont? Vermont requires registration through the Office of Professional Regulation for any residential work over a certain dollar threshold. - Can you email me your liability insurance certificate before the first visit? Mowing season means string trimmers throwing debris, mowers throwing rocks, and equipment around your house, your cars, and your windows. A $1 million liability minimum is the standard. If they can't produce a current certificate that names you as a certificate holder, walk.
- What's the schedule, and what happens if it rains? A real answer: "We come every Tuesday between 8 and 4. If it's raining, we come Wednesday. If it's still raining Wednesday, we come Thursday. We don't skip weeks." A vague answer means they will skip weeks when it's convenient for them, and the lawn will look like it.
- Who is on my property? Same crew every visit, or rotating crews? A consistent crew learns the property and the owner's preferences. Rotating crews damage the same plants twice and don't notice when something changes.
- How do you handle property damage? Mower hits a sprinkler head. String trimmer scars a tree. Tire ruts in soft spring ground. The right answer is "We document it, tell you, and either fix it or pay to have it fixed." The wrong answer is silence — you find the damage yourself in July and try to figure out who to bill.
- Do you sub the work out? Some bigger companies sell contracts and sub the actual mowing to whoever they can find. The crew that shows up is not the company on the contract. Ask directly. If subs are involved, ask whether they carry their own insurance.

The questions are the test, but watching how they're answered is the real signal.
