The panels look fine the first summer, then a couple of winters go by and the line starts to wander. Gates stop latching, posts tilt at their own angles, and what should have been a twenty-year fence is a rebuild in year three.
Fence posts are the one part of the job where Vermont ground makes its own rules. What's the Frost-Line Rule for Fence Posts in Vermont?
The rule is one line: the bottom of the post, or the bottom of its footing, has to sit below the frost line, and in Rutland County that means at least 48 inches down. The frost line is the deepest point at which soil moisture freezes in winter. Below it, the ground stays above 32 degrees year-round, so nothing down there freezes, expands, or moves. Anything set above that line is inside the freeze zone, and the freeze zone is where fences die.
Vermont follows the International Residential Code, which sets our regional frost depth at 48 inches. We treat that as the floor, not the goal. On the Rutland valley floor we set posts to 52 or 54 inches. Above about 1,500 feet, on exposed lots around Killington, Mendon, and Chittenden, the frost drives deeper and we go 56 to 60 inches. The extra depth costs a few minutes of auger time per hole and almost nothing in material, and it is the whole difference between a fence that holds and one that walks.
Why Does Frost Heave Wreck a Fence?
Frost heave wrecks a fence because water in the soil freezes, expands, and jacks anything shallow upward, and a fence post is a perfect handle for it to grab. Here is the mechanism. As the ground freezes from the top down, ice forms in the soil and expands roughly 9 percent by volume. That expansion has to go somewhere, so it pushes up. Ice bonds to the sides of a post or its concrete collar and drags the whole assembly up with it, a little at a time. This is the freeze-thaw jack, and on a shallow post it lifts about an inch a winter.
The reason it never corrects itself is what happens on the thaw. When the ground releases the post in spring, the post does not drop cleanly back into its old hole. Soil and grit have already slid into the gap underneath, so the post settles a little higher than it started. Freeze, lift, thaw, backfill, repeat. Over two or three winters a post set at 30 or 36 inches can ride three to six inches out of the ground, and a fence line where each post heaves a different amount turns into a row of crooked teeth. Vermont makes this worse than most places because our freeze-thaw cycles are frequent and our soils hold water, and wet soil heaves harder than dry.
How Deep Should a Fence Post Go Below the Vermont Frost Line?
Deep enough that the bottom of the post clears the frost line, which in Rutland County is the 48-inch floor, and that floor almost always governs over the old one-third rule. The one-third rule you hear from installers down south says to bury one-third of the post height: an 8-foot post for a 6-foot fence gets 2 feet in the ground. That math produces a 24-inch hole. In Killington, where the frost runs 48 inches or more, a 24-inch post is buried entirely inside the freeze zone. It has no chance.
So in Vermont the two rules collide, and the frost line wins. Run both numbers and dig to whichever is deeper:
- The one-third figure: for a 6-foot fence on an 8-foot post, that is about 24 inches. Fine in Tennessee. Not close in Vermont.
- The frost-line floor: the bottom of the post below 48 inches on the valley floor, and 54 to 60 inches at elevation.
- Footing math: if you set the post in a concrete footing, it is the bottom of the concrete that has to clear the frost line. An 8-inch-tall concrete plug means the hole bottom needs to reach 56 inches to keep the concrete below a 48-inch frost line.
In practice, on Rutland County jobs, the frost-line floor is deeper than the one-third figure every single time, so it is the number that decides the hole. That is the piece most homeowners and a lot of installers get backward. They bury a third of the post, hit 24 or 30 inches, and call it done, when the only depth that matters here is how far below the frost line the post ends up.
What Post Size and Spacing Does a 6-Foot Fence Need?
A standard 6-foot privacy fence wants 4x4 line posts at 6 to 8 feet on center, with 6x6 posts for gates, corners, and ends where the load concentrates. The taller and more solid the fence, the more it acts like a sail, so post size and spacing are about wind and snow load as much as looks. Get the spans too wide or the posts too small and the fence sags and racks long before the wood ever rots.

The other detail that stops sag before it starts is bracing the corners and gate posts and hanging gates on the 6x6s. A gate hung on a 4x4 will pull that post out of plumb within a season or two, and then it drags. Wider spacing looks cheaper on the estimate because it means fewer holes, but on a windy Rutland County hilltop it is the first thing that fails.
Concrete, Gravel, or Dirt Around the Post?
Concrete helps only when its bottom sits below the frost line, and it actively hurts when it does not, so the smartest backfill in Vermont is usually gravel at the bottom and concrete only at the top. A solid concrete plug gives a post great lateral rigidity, but it also gives frost a smooth, wide surface to grip. If that plug stops short of the frost line, the freeze-thaw jack lifts the whole cylinder like a cork, and now you have heaved a chunk of concrete instead of just a post. Concrete also holds water against a wood post, which speeds rot at the worst spot, right at the base.
Here is the method that holds up in our soil:
- Gravel at the base. Put 6 inches of 3/4-inch crushed stone in the bottom of the hole. It drains water away from the end grain of the post, so there is less moisture to freeze and less to rot the wood.
- Set and plumb the post on that gravel bed, with the bottom of the post below the frost line.
- Gravel up the sides to within about a foot of grade, tamped tight in lifts. The irregular stone lets the ground move without dragging the post along, which is exactly what you want against heave.
- Concrete the top foot. A concrete collar at the surface gives the lateral stiffness that keeps the fence from racking, right where that stiffness matters.
Plain tamped dirt is the cheapest option and it is fine for a light 4-foot yard fence in well-drained ground, but for a 6-foot privacy fence that catches wind and snow, it does not hold a post plumb through Vermont winters. Whatever you backfill with, the depth below the frost line is still the thing doing the real work. Backfill choice tunes the result; it does not rescue a shallow hole.
What's the Best Wood for Fence Posts in Vermont?
For posts in Vermont ground, the honest ranking is black locust first, ground-contact rated pressure-treated pine second, and western red cedar third. The distinction that matters is ground contact. A post is buried in wet, freezing soil for its whole life, which is a far harder job than the rails and boards above it, and not every rot-resistant wood is rated for it.

The common mistake is buying a cedar or PT post that is rated "Above Ground" and setting it in a hole. Above-ground treatment carries less preservative and is meant for rails and pickets, not for the part sitting in wet soil.
